Short-Step Activation: Live Ball
15 min Coach / feederIntermediateMovement
Improve adjustment steps and ball spacing from different court positions in a live-ball drill.
Best for: players who arrive near the ball but lose control because their final adjustment steps are too large.
Goal
Use quick short adjustment steps to create contact space from changing live-ball positions.
Success today
Complete 10 of 14 feeds with at least two visible adjustment steps before balanced contact and a deep reply.

Step by step
Your 15-minute practice
0–3 min
Wake up the final steps
- Shuffle rapidly between the two contact cones without a ball.
- Finish in a balanced hitting stance.
8 feeds · 4 min
Add slower live balls
- Ask for eight feeds within the marked zones.
- Use at least two small steps before contact.
7–11 min
Vary the spacing
- Let the feeder move each ball slightly closer or farther.
- Avoid reaching with the racket.
14 feeds · 4 min
Score fourteen feeds
- Count adjustment steps, balance and deep target together.
- Aim for ten successes.
Remember
Three player cues
- Fast feet finish the spacing.
- Stop the body before contact.
- Recover ready for variation.
Avoid these
Common mistakes
- Using one large final step
- Adjusting only with the upper body
- Leaving recovery until the next feed starts
Keep the same purpose
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Keep feeds predictable and allow the full deep court as target.
Make it harder
Increase feed tempo and occasionally repeat the same side to test the first adjustment step.
Keep it safe
Use flat cones and keep the compact movement zone clear of balls between sets.
