15 min Coach / feederIntermediate–AdvancedMovement

Use reflex-based short-step activation before changing direction and speed from the baseline.

Best for: players who react slowly to late direction or pace changes near the baseline.

Goal

Activate the feet before the feed, change direction quickly and use short steps to control contact spacing.

Step by step

Your 15-minute practice

  1. 0–3 min

    Activate at centre

    • Use six seconds of short quick steps, then freeze ready.
    • Keep the feet under the hips.
  2. 3–7 min

    React to side calls

    • Move on the feeder’s forehand or backhand call.
    • Use the outside foot for the first push.
  3. 7–11 min

    Add speed changes

    • Shorten the preparation for faster feeds.
    • Create more space and height for slower feeds.
  4. 16 feeds · 4 min

    Score sixteen reactions

    • Count first step, balance and centre recovery.
    • Aim for twelve successes.

Remember

Three player cues

  • Feet active before the cue.
  • First push goes the right way.
  • Small steps finish the contact.

Avoid these

Common mistakes

  • Bouncing too high during activation
  • Crossing the first step in the wrong direction
  • Letting faster feeds remove recovery

Keep the same purpose

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Call direction earlier and keep every feed at the same pace.

Make it harder

Delay the call and mix repeated sides with faster and slower balls.

Keep it safe

Keep the activation box free of balls and pause when quick feet become noisy or uncontrolled.
