Rally Positioning + Decision-Making
15 min PartnerIntermediateMatch play
Connect split-step timing, ball reading, decision-making, tracking, positioning, execution and recovery.
Best for: players who can rally but recover to the same place regardless of ball direction or pressure.
Goal
Read each rally ball, choose a safe target and recover to a position that protects the open court.
Success today
Complete 3 rallies of 10 shots with both players reaching the marked recovery zone after at least 8 shots in each rally.

Step by step
Your 15-minute practice
0–3 min
Map the recovery spots
- Shadow a crosscourt shot and move towards the open-court recovery cone.
- Split as your partner would strike.
3–7 min
Build six-ball rallies
- Rally at 60% pace into the deep lane.
- Call recover after each contact.
7–11 min
Read changing depth
- Let the rally ball vary inside the target lane.
- Adjust recovery distance to the pressure of your shot.
11–15 min
Complete three tens
- Count only rallies with at least eight visible recoveries.
- Aim for three rallies of ten.
Remember
Three player cues
- Read before choosing.
- Recover towards the open court.
- Split on partner contact.
Avoid these
Common mistakes
- Running to centre after every shot
- Watching the ball instead of moving
- Changing direction before the rally is balanced
Keep the same purpose
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Use a larger target and complete three rallies of six shots with a slower ball.
Make it harder
Allow direction changes after six stable shots and require recovery to adjust immediately.
Keep it safe
Keep spare balls at the back fence and stop the rally when a loose ball enters either recovery route.
