Is this tournament the right fit for my child?

Eligibility only means a child is allowed to enter. A suitable event also matches their ball stage, current skills, confidence and willingness to compete.

01

Check the event before paying

Do not rely on the event title alone. Save the answers before entering so the family knows what the day involves.

  • Which ball, court size and scoring format are used?
  • How many matches are guaranteed, and how long might the day last?
  • Who helps inexperienced players with scoring or disputes?
  • What are the withdrawal and refund rules?
  • What parent behaviour or coaching is permitted?
02

Check the child’s practical readiness

A child does not need perfect strokes. They should broadly understand how points begin and end, the event’s scoring and how to seek official help.

Ask: “Would you like to try this event, or would you rather wait?” Nervousness and willingness can exist together. Repeated refusal should not be reframed as a lack of courage.

03

Define success before entering

Choose a goal available regardless of the result: checking in, keeping score, using a routine or recovering after mistakes.

Say: “This event is a chance to learn how competition works. It is not a test of your future.”

Put it into practice

What parents can do

  • Confirm the ball, court, format and likely duration.
  • Ask what support exists for inexperienced players.
  • Check that the child wants to take part.
  • Agree on one result-independent goal.

Choose the right next step

Who to contact—and what to say

  • Organiser: “What experience level is this event designed for, and are multiple matches guaranteed?”
  • Coach: “Does this format match what my child is currently practising?”
  • Coach: “What should we prepare before entering, and what would indicate that waiting is better?”
