15 min PartnerIntermediate–AdvancedMatch play
Sustain a live rally that uses net-game volley positioning and control.
Best for: pairs who want to sustain controlled baseline-to-net exchanges instead of ending the first volley.
Goal
Keep a live net-versus-baseline rally going with deep volleys, safe passing balls and balanced recovery.
Success today
Complete 3 rallies of 8 shots with at least 4 controlled volleys and no ball landing in the front half of the net player’s court.

Court blueprint
Set up the court
The baseline partner feeds and rallies while the net player directs volleys deep, recovers centrally and sustains the exchange before roles switch.
- Ball direction
- Recovery
- Target zone
- 01One player starts near the service line and one at the baseline.
- 02Mark a deep volley target and a wide passing-ball target.
- 03Begin each rally with a gentle baseline feed to the volleyer.
Step by step
Your 15-minute practice
0–3 min
Set cooperative pace
- Rally four baseline-to-volley balls through the middle.
- Keep every contact below winning pace.
3–7 min
Build six-shot rallies
- The volleyer aims deep and the baseliner aims safely away from the body.
- Recover after every shot.
7–11 min
Use the wide target
- Allow one wide passing attempt after four stable shots.
- The volleyer moves rather than reaching.
11–15 min
Complete three eights
- Count rallies containing at least four volleys.
- Switch roles after each successful rally.
Remember
Three player cues
- Volley deep to stay in control.
- Recover to cover both sides.
- Add width only after stability.
Avoid these
Common mistakes
- Trying to finish the first feed
- Standing too close to the net
- Passing hard before the rally is established
Keep the same purpose
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Use only the middle half of the court and complete rallies of six.
Make it harder
Allow any passing direction after four stable balls and require rallies of ten.
Keep it safe
Use one active ball, keep spare balls at the fence and stop immediately if a ball enters the net player’s feet.
